The Otto Group
Otto is the world's largest home shopping organisation. It owns 123 companies and operates in 19 countries worldwide.
Otto was first established by Werner Otto in 1949 in Hamburg, Germany. The first OTTO mail order catalogue was published in 1959 with a print run of 300
hand-bound copies. In 1991, Otto acquired Grattan and then in 1999 bought Freemans.
Freemans Catalogue history
Freemans started trading in 1905, making it one of the oldest catalogues in the UK. It all started in a 2 room terraced house in Lavender
Sweep, London by Arthur and Stanley Rampton, William Jones and Henry Freeman. During the mail order boom time in the 1930s, it moved to larger
premises on Clapham Road, South London, where it remains today.
Since its merger with Grattan in 1999, the London office now only employs some 200 staff, with many head office functions being
transfered to the Grattan head office in Bradford. Traditionally the catalogue has a reputuation for being the most fashionable of the major UK home shopping
retailers, this is a reputation of which it is very proud.
